Every calculator and guide on this site is designed around one question: What does this specific dog need? How Our Calculators Work
Our feeding calculators use the standard resting energy requirement (RER) formula — RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75 — multiplied by a life-stage and activity factor. This is the same approach taught in veterinary nutrition courses and used by many veterinary clinics for quick estimates. Each calculator then adjusts for:
- Body condition score (underweight, ideal, overweight)
- Neuter status (intact animals typically need more calories)
- Food calorie density (kcal per cup or per can, which varies by brand)
- Special states such as pregnancy, lactation, senior weight management, or puppy growth
We display the math so you can see how the result was reached. If you enter a different weight or food, the result changes transparently.
